Adverse Effects of Cadmium on Soil Microflora and Fauna

  • Chapter
Cadmium in Soils and Plants

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 85))

Abstract

Cadmium is not known to be an essential element, so there are probably no beneficial effects of this metal on biological systems. On the other hand, adverse impacts of Cd can occur, depending on the loading and mobility of Cd in soil. The latter depends on the soil physico-chemical properties. Therefore, threshold values for effects assessed by total Cd concentrations will vary according to soil conditions. Research relating Cd effects to more bioavailable fractions may overcome this problem, but to date such studies are very scarce.
