Abstract

In this chapter we will consider at some length what an image texture means for human and computer vision. Also, this chapter presents the basic theoretical background of probabilistic image modelling by Gibbs and Markov random fields. Modern theory of random fields is extremely deep and intricated, but we will explore in this book only rather simple features of Gibbs random fields that are necessary to study the image models and modelling techniques under consideration.
