The Prolamins of the Triticeae

  • Chapter
Seed Proteins

Abstract

The grass tribe Triticeae includes three major cultivated cereals, wheat, barley and rye, and related wild grasses, many of the latter having been studied in detail in relation to the origin and evolution of the cultivated species and as sources of genes for improvement by wide crossing or genetic engineering. In all species 2x = 14, with species being diploid or polyploid. Comparative studies have allowed the homoeologous (i.e. homologous but non-pairing) chromosomes in the various genomes to be identified, showing a high degree of relatedness in the location of genes encoding the prolamins and other seed proteins.
