Abstract

Although there probably has been language attrition as long as there has been language acquisition and language teaching, research on this phenomenon is mostly of a recent date. In the history of foreign language teaching, complaints about non-acquisition abound, but it is not clear from the reports to what extent what had been learnt at some point was actually lost or simply not acquired.
