Abstract
The total population of Japan is about 120 million with a working population of 64 million. The current ratio of farmers to the total population is about 6% and the number of farmers therefore is 4 million. Of these 800,000 grow pulses. The pulses most commonly grown are the Adzuki bean (Vigna angularis), peanut (Arachis hypogea), field pea (Pisum sativum), kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), broad bean (Vicia faba L), and soybean (Glycine max). Other pulses such as chickpea, lentil, small-seeded faba beans (Vicia faba L), vetches, lupins (Lupinus spp) cowpeas, pigeon peas and mung beans are not produced in Japan.
