Abstract

Options exist for substantial increases in the area sown and yield of chickpea in the Mediterranean highlands as a result of an advancement of sowing date. To realise this potential requires genotypes with enhanced disease resistance and improved winter hardiness. Recent experience with lentil illustrates how genotypes suited to early sowing can be most readily and efficiently identified through a clear understanding of the variability in photothermal sensitivity of flowering available in the world germplasm pool. This understanding, coupled with simple agro-meteorological modelling of the risks of damage from disease and cold, can identify suitable genotypes for testing much more quickly and efficiently than using conventional breeding and traditional agronomic testing strategies.
