Abstract
Albania has entered a period of political and economic transition as it adopts a democratic form of government and a free market economy. It has inherited from the past an undeveloped economy and severe environmental problems. Damage to forests, loss of wetlands, overgrazing, agricultural development, mismanagement of terraces, outdated technologies, and the lack of wastewater treatment plants are among the many consequences of past neglect of natural resources and environmental degradation.
