Abstract
Turkey is located in the southeastern part of the Balkans. It joins the two continents of Europe and Asia. The European part is named Thrasian and the Asian part Anatolia. The country is surrounded by sea on three sides; the Black Sea in the north, which is shared by six riparian countries, the Aegean Sea in the west and down through the Marmara Sea to the Mediterranean Sea in the south, as shown in Figure 1. The total shoreline is approximately 8,300 km long and half of Turkey’s population of 65 million lives in coastal cities, districts and villages, even though the coastal area covers only 29% of the total surface area of the country. The Thrasian part of Turkey is small but has a fairly high level of population density, as part of Greater Metropolitan Istanbul is located here.
