Abstract
A brief account is given of the role of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in the dissemination of information in and about astronomy worldwide. The focus is on topics where the IAU can and must play a unique role. Practical results, as well as current activities and developments, are emphasized rather than organisational detail or completeness.
