Abstract

Fairly complete maps of well-studied organelle genomes were constructed well before DNA sequencing. Some of the earliest comparative work was that of Palmer (e.g., Palmer et al., 1988) on plant chloroplasts. Mathematical studies leading to the DERANGE algorithm (Sankoff, 1992) for estimating the weighted minimum number of inversions and transpositions necessary to convert one gene order to another was inspired by comparisons of chloroplast gene orders in Chlamydomonas species presented by Monique Turmel at the first CIAR Evolutionary Biology annual meeting in 1987.
