Abstract
We review findings of nonrandom distribution of genes in animal genomes across large genetic distances (billions of years). While the gene organization of more closely related animals (such as vertebrates) is known to be similar, much less have been published on comparative mapping of genes across large genetic distances and only a few reports pay attention to synteny analysis of genes unrelated by sequence and function.
