Period Changes as a Tool to Study Stellar Evolution

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO Science Series ((ASIC,volume 544))

Abstract

I present an overview of the study of period changes of different selected classes of pulsating star and examine the possibilities of using them to infer evolutionary time scales from the observed pulsations. Unfortunately, only one group of stars may be sufficiently well-behaved (hot ZZ Ceti stars) to provide a meaningful result in that respect.

Alternative explanations for the cause of non-evolutionary period changes have been proposed. These are usually individual for individual classes of star, and it may be useful to think about mechanisms which have the potential to explain the behaviour of more than just one group.
