Abstract

The mean densities of roAp stars can be predicted from the fundamental spacings of their observed p-mode eigenspectra. Combined with mass estimates and effective temperatures from Strömgren photometry, seismic results yield luminosities which can be compared with those from Hipparcos parallaxes. The first such comparison (for a sample of 12 roAp stars) gives generally good agreement but astrometry finds systematically larger parallaxes than predicted by asteroseismology. One possible explanation is that roAp stars are cooler than expected. However, large discrepancies such as a Circini (which would have to be cooler by 1000K cannot be explained this way. Other more exotic ideas may be necessary.
