Abstract
Several flows require cylindrical coordinates. Some of them can be solved in Cartesian coordinates with a detriment of accuracy. For example a three-dimensional simulation of a round jet in Cartesian coordinates gives reasonable results but periodicity or free- slip conditions in two directions introduce an unphysical perturbation with an azimuthal wavenumber n = 4. On the other hand in other flows, such as those in pipes, no-slip conditions at the wall drive the flow and enforce the use of cylindrical coordinates.
