Abstract

In this paper we investigate one-dimensional force interactions, as they appear in multibody systems when force potentials are used. We present a decomposition of the force interactions leading to a classical continuous force law and a set-valued law which is expressed by a monotone step function. It is shown that the step function may be obtained by arranging unilateral primitives parallel to each other and in series, finally resulting in a complementarity formulation of the problem. As a result, combinations of unilateral primitives are recognized to be well-known force elements from practical applications.
