Abstract

Extremophilic microorganisms belong to various physiological groups comprising thermophiles, hyperthermophiles, alkaliphiles, acidophiles, halophiles, psychrophiles, and barophiles. Research on extreme environments and their microflora was greatly stimulated by the dicovdry of the Archaea as a third form of life (Woese et al. 1990), as many extremophiles belong to the archaeal domain. Moreover, such environments, especially hydrothermal vents exhibit the physicochemical conditions considered as compatible with the origin of life. Research has focused on thermophilic and hyperthermophilic groups because they possess enzymes with enhanced thermostability and hence may have potential industrial applications (Adams 1993; Lowe et al. 1993). This paper describes the microbial diversity of anaerobes isolated from extreme environments. Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 show the phylogenetic distribution of extremophilic anaerobes amongst the Bacteria and Archaea domains, respectively.
