Life at High Salt Concentrations: Possibilities and Limitations

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Cellular Origin and Life in Extreme Habitats ((COLE,volume 2))

Abstract

Microbial life exists at salt concentrations up to NaCl saturation (approximately 5.2 M) The bright red color of saltern crystallizer ponds and many hypersaline lakes world wide shows that such environments may support development of dense microbial communities. However, the number of different microorganisms able to grow at these extremely high salinities is small.
