Abstract
Unlike many European countries, a large proportion of the drinking water supplied in the UK is derived from rivers and reservoirs; only 30% is drawn from groundwater sources. To meet the challenges posed by surface water, the UK water industry has, over the past 5-10 years, invested substantially in advanced treatment processes such as activated carbon, ozone and improved coagulation. Together with improved monitoring and control, this has resulted in significant improvements to the quality of water leaving the treatment works.
