Employment of Artificial Reefs for Environmental Maintenance in the Gulf of Finland

  • Chapter
Artificial Reefs in European Seas

Abstract

The main goal of the Finnish Archipelago Sea artificial reef project was to study whether the growth capacity of fouling communities in the northern Baltic Sea was high enough to capture significant amounts of nutrients released by fish farms. Fish farming is an increasing industry in the area and nutrients released by overfeeding and fish faeces are becoming a serious problem, causing eutrophication of the Archipelago Sea. So far no effective technology is available to treat waste waters released by fish farms. The local fish-farming technology is especially problematic, since the fish are kept in open net cages, effectively creating a non- point source of pollution.
