Risk-Assessment Model for Evaluating Environmental Remediation Options at The Stráž Underground Uranium Leaching Site

Abstract

Chemical mining technology was used for the mining of uranium in northern Bohemia for about 25 years. This technology caused severe contamination of groundwater in the mining area and its vicinity. The main goal of the Nuclear Research Institute Řež pic project, performed by its contractors, was to develop and use a complex mathematical tool for quantitative risk assessment of proposed environmental remediation technologies. Based on this procedure, an optimal remedial action was selected and recommended for the environmental remediation of the site. This option covers remediation of contaminant lenses in the turonian layer with the help of reverse electrodialysis. This action also accomplishes remediation of the cenomanian layer by using the Station of Acid Solution Liquidation (SASL), an evaporator-based facility.
