Abstract

The extraadrenal system comprises two types of minute macro- or microscopic structures, all having an afferent sensory innervation or connection:

  1. 1.

with the parasympathetic system, sensory innervated through cranial nerve branches. They are usually non-chromaffin, more frequent in the head and neck and have at least in part a chemoreceptor function.

  2. 2.

with the ortho-sympathetic system, are chromaffin, and prevail in the abdominal-thoracic paraaortic region, functionally homologous to the adrenal medulla (Capella) (fig. 8. 1).
