Abstract
Tailings are a waste product of mining activities. The ore is crushed in processing to a size less than 0.1 to 1.0 mm, the metal content is removed, and the remaining product is called tailings. Normally, the tailings will be pumped as slurry to a sedimentation pond that is surrounded by dams and, sometimes, natural heights that form a tailings dam. Tailings dams contain both solids and water that make them similar to conventional water dams. However, their design life must be significantly longer as waste repositories because of the long-lived nature of the radiological material contained within them.
