Heart rate Variability: A Simple Methodology with Several Unrecognised Technical and Methodological Problems

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine ((DICM,volume 229))

Abstract

In the last 10 years several groups of clinical and experimental cardiologists have demonstrated that the analysis of heart rate variability is unprecedented tool capable of providing relevant information on autonomic modulation of sinus node as well as on patients’ prognosis in a variety of clinical conditions such as acute myocardial infarction, cardiac failure and diabetes (1). Nevertheless, despite its apparent simplicity, this methodology is still surrounded by several unresolved methodological and technical issues that have prevented not only an unique and correct interpretation of the results but also a more extensive utilisation of this non invasive technique in the clinical setting.
