Abstract
I first became interested in the work and the fortunes of the abbé Henri Grégoire in the mid-1960’s when I was tracing the development of modern racist theories about blacks and Jews. I had reviewed Arthur Hertzberg’s The French Enlightenment and the Jews for the American Historical Review. This led me to attempt to understand the wide range of Grégoire’s humanitarian views and undertakings, and eventually to the organization of the conference from which this volume originated.
