Abstract

In this paper, the contribution of in situ straining experiments to the understanding of plasticity phenomena is illustrated by different examples taken among recent works done in the Toulouse group concerning high performance materials.

The main interest of this experimental approach originates in the direct observation of the movement of the dislocations. The qualitative information and the quantitative data which can be deduced are exposed. As a main limitation can exist through thin foil effects, a critical look on the results is proposed and allows to avoid the corresponding possible artefacts.
