Fungal Pathogens and Parasites of Insects

  • Chapter
Book cover Applied Microbial Systematics

Abstract

Biologists generally agree that insects are the most numerous, ecologically successful, and taxonomically diverse macro-organisms on the face of this planet. Comparatively few of these biologists, however, seem to appreciate that these arthropods are typical animals much like ourselves and, for purposes of this chapter, are attacked by a wide spectrum of fungi as well as by bacteria (see Chapter 7), viruses, and other microbes. Perhaps the major difference between the diseases of insects and those of most mammals is the perspective with which these diseases are held by humans: the diseases of most animals (and, of course, of many of the plants most important to us) are maladies to be prevented or treated within the limits of our technological and fiscal capabilities. The diseases of insects and pest vertebrates are generally regarded as beneficial for humans and are to be encouraged.
