Molecular Ecology of Mycorrhizal Fungi

  • Chapter
Applied Microbial Systematics

Abstract

Mycorrhizal relationships are mutualistic symbioses between plant roots and certain soil fungi. Most species of plants are able to form them and in many ecosystems the fungus is essential to the plant for efficient mineral nutrient uptake and hence optimum plant health and development. The importance of mycorrhizas in a number of applied situations (e.g. agriculture, forestry, land revegetation) has been stressed elsewhere (see Jeffries & Dodd, 1991; Sieverding, 1991; Gianinazzi & Schüepp, 1994; Pfleger & Lindermann, 1994; Smith & Read, 1997) and it is now accepted that the belowground activity of mycorrhizal fungi has a profound effect on aboveground plant ecology.
