Autoimmune hepatitis in South America

  • Chapter
Immunology and Liver

Part of the book series: Falk Symposium ((FASS,volume 114))

Abstract

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a liver disease classically described in Caucasian patients from North America and Europe. There are very few publications regarding this disease in patients from South America. Doubts, however, arise as to whether there are the same similarities between the disease seen in patients from the former geographical areas and the disease seen in patients from the latter, especially regarding the following: clinical picture, onset of the disease, AIH serological markers, HLA association, and extrahep-atic manifestations (mainly those related to other autoimmune diseases).
