Molecular and Genetic Approaches to Rust Resistance (Melampsora sp.) in Poplar (Populus sp.)

Part of the book series: Forestry Sciences ((FOSC,volume 49))

Abstract

Various Melampsora rust races are causing defoliations on susceptible cultivars in commercial poplar plantations. Genetic and molecular analyses of parents and families of a factorial mating design have been investigated to determine components of resistance to rust. One genomic area was revealed which was involved in qualitative resistance. But, this qualitative resistance is not sufficient to assure durability and other genes involved in quantitative resistance are masked. Then, our objective is to reveal and combine quantitative resistance genes to obtain durable resistant cultivars. A genetic map is in progress in order to reveal molecular markers linked to quantitative rust resistance genes.
