Abstract
Much of modern ENT work requires special equipment and therefore the scope for procedures in general practice is limited. Those that are described, however, are practical and possible, providing that the following principles are observed. The equipment should be simple and flexible in usage. A good history is important, for instance in revealing possible contraindications, such as syringing an ear with a perforated drum. It is also important for the general practitioner to decide whether the procedure is within his or her capabilities.
