Abstract

It is difficult to give an accurate figure for the prevalence of osteoarthritis (OA). While the radiograph may be the “gold standard” for the diagnosis of OA, it is not practical to obtain radiographs of all the joints in a large, representative sample. Hence, prevalence figures based on radiographic changes must be limited to specific joints. Depending on whether mild changes are included, or only more severe changes, the prevalence rate will vary.
