Abstract
A fusible and soluble aromatic rod-like LC polyester was synthesized by melt polycondensation and samples of different molecular weights were obtained by fractionated precipitation. Solution properties and thermal properties of the original polyester and its fractions were investigated by polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and melt rheology. The formation of physical gels was observed in 3-phenoxytoluene. The formation of anisotropic solutions was observed for 20 – 43 weight % polyester above the gel melting point (60°C) in 3-phenoxytoluene. The amorphous polyester has a glass transition between 135°C and 145°C depending on the molecular weight. The polyester forms a nematic phase. No further phase transition can detected by polarizing microscopy, DSC, and melt rheology up to 320°C.
