Abstract
Dramatic changes have taken place in the structure and function of financial markets and in the financial services industry during the last two decades. The key features have been the rapid globalization of the markets and the enhanced role of the financial services industry. This chapter discusses the main dynamics behind these historic changes and speculates on what lies in the future. While I intend to examine the subject from a global perspective, it will be inevitable that I make more frequent references to the Japanese situation.
