Abstract

The use of combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has become the de facto standard method for environmental analysis due to the wide usage and acceptance of the technique as a quantitative tool. Here the variety of instrumentation available is discussed with respect to environmental chemistry, sensitivity, selectivity and application and the theory, maintenance, calibration and importance of care in operation of analytical mass spectrometers are considered. Major environmental leglislation has incorporated GC/MS in an effort to obtain the maximum sensitivity and selectivity for the environmental dollar and those techniques and regulatory methods which serve as the cornerstone of environmental chemistry are reviewed. The ability to reduce environmental data for laboratory and regulatory purposes is important and will be reviewed from the laboratory and laboratory management perspective.
