Abstract

Chromatography is a method of chemical analysis based on the differential distribution of sample components between a mobile phase and a stationary phase. The mobile phase may be a mixture of components dissolved in a suitable inert solvent, with the stationary phase either an adsorbent solid (liquid-solid chromatography) or a liquid supported on an adsorbent solid (liquid-liquid chromatography). Alternatively, the mobile phase may comprise a sample mixture in a vapour diluted with an inert carrier gas, with a liquid stationary phase supported on an adsorbent solid (gas-liquid chromatography, often shortened to ‘gas chromatography’).
