Reliability Data Collection in Process Plants

  • Chapter
Reliability Data Banks

Abstract

The intelligent use of quantified reliability experience, and its integration into the development, design, construction and fabrication of processes, plants, systems and components, and into the corresponding maintenance and quality ensurance strategies, have achieved availabilities of better than 90% for facilities, 99% for systems and 99•9% for components in a number of industries. However, when attempting to convince plant operators and designers of the advantages of collecting reliability data, the response will often be reluctance to agree, as it is claimed that such data are inaccurate, far too uncertain and not transferable; accurate data are too expensive; the cost-benefit relation is out of balance; and expenditure on accurate data can be astronomical.
