Abstract
Data banks are the modern expression of a process that has been an occupation of man from time immemorial. The earliest collections of records are of Chinese or Egyptian origin. The prime requirements of such records are that they are based on fact and are accessible to those who need them. These requirements have remained unaltered but the mechanisms whereby the end product is achieved have advanced considerably. In fact, the changes over the period that this review covers have been considerable and dramatic.
