Abstract
It is likely that most bonded joints contain some imperfections or defects. The significance of these will depend not only on their extent, but also on their position, the loading and environmental conditions which the bond will experience in service and, fortunately, in many cases, their existence will not be detrimental. It has been shown, for instance, that a debond extending to over 50% of the area in the centre of a simple overlap has very little effect on the initial strength of the joint [1].
