Abstract
In considering the response of a system to a step demand, a clear distinction has to be drawn between small and large step response. The dynamic equations derived so far assume small perturbations about a fixed steady-state operating point, and are therefore applicable to transient response to a small step demand. Since small and large step response are relative terms, a definition providing a clear distinction is required.
