Abstract
Over 8000 patients have received implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) over the last 10 years and the rate of implantation continues to increase. ICDs are now an accepted therapeutic modality in the management of patients with recurrent ventricular arrhythmias and are uniquely suited to certain patient groups [4]. There are however problems associated with their use in terms of cost, patient acceptability and the need for device renewal which mean that the devices are far from a panacea for sudden cardiac death.
