Abstract
In order for surgery to provide a reasonable, effective therapeutic alternative to drug therapy in patients with supraventricular arrhythmias, the following criteria must be fulfilled:
-
1.
The mechanism of the arrhythmia responsible for the patients symptoms must be identified.
-
2.
The site of origin of the tachycardia, or the pathway responsible for its maintenance must be located.
-
3.
The area in question must be accessible to surgical ablation.
-
4.
Surgical ablation must be achieved with an acceptable mortality and morbidity.
