Abstract
After a short review of the history of pituitary growth hormone the effects of the availability of biosynthetic growth hormone are described. Possible benefits, particularly the hope to relieve some of the distress of short children, are weighed against possible risks, a.o. the uncertainties about effects and side-effects and the high cost. Under these circumstances we have chosen for a strategy of concerted action by the medical professionals directly envolved: well-planned prospective long-term studies and thorough retrospective analysis.
