Abstract

The Heidelberg anomaloscope uses semiconductor light sources for the Rayleigh match primaries. Diode light emission spectra are narrowed by line interference filters. Dominant wavelengths and bandwidths of the primaries match those of the Nagel (and Ohta) anomaloscope and hereby the German standard DIN 6160. ‘Neutralstimmung’ (i.e., neutral adaptation) is maintained by a built-in adaptive illumination closely corresponding to illuminant C. Because matching range broadens with viewing time (this may occur to a particular extent in acquired defects), presentation of test and adaptation fields is alternated at fixed rates. The stimulus is viewed through a body tube, thus avoiding desaturation of the test field primaries from ambient light, and accounting for a reproducible test field viewing angle of 2°.

Specimens of results in acquired defects due to maculopathy and to optic neuropathy are demonstrated and compared to those obtained with the Nagel anomaloscope. Matching positions, ranges and slopes in cases of congenital colour vision defects are shown as evaluated by the Nagel and by the Heidelberg anomaloscope.
