Abstract

An understanding of the interacting relationships between soil and water is imperative for irrigators who strive for the most efficient use of water for their crops and soils. The complex interaction between the components of water, soil, and plant narrows technical options from which to choose alternative management regimes. What occurs in the soil profile can be explored in the context of soil water being a medium or solution to transport essential elements to plant roots. Figure 5.1 depicts soil as a medium for nutrients, water, air, micro-organisms, and plant roots.
