Application of the Differential Conductivity Method: The Effect of Chain-Length of Homologous Surfactants on the Partition Coefficient of Alkanols Between Bulk Water and Micelles

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 324))

Abstract

The partition coefficient (K) of alkanols (C4-C7) between bulk water and micelles of an homologous series of sodium alkyl sulphates (C9-C11) has been determined. The results show that for a given alkanol, K tends to increase with increasing chain length of surfactant and that the increase is more appreciable for longer chain alkanols. However, the dependence is very small, appearing within the determination uncertainty. In the determination of K, a new method named “differential conductivity method” was applied to the present systems consisting of surfactants with differing cmc values over a wide region.
