An Investigation on the Penetration of Lipids in the Bilayer of Stratum Corneum

Abstract

A simplified mixture of model stratum corneum was analyzed to make an estimation on the penetration of lipids on the stratum corneum lipid structure. Small x-ray diffractometry and optical microscopy were employed for these purposes.

The small angle x-ray diffractograms showed the lipids to be partitioned in the hydrated acid/soap host layered structure between the methyl group layers. Cholesterol, however, which was entirely located in the acid/soap chains, attracted other compounds from the location between the methyl group layers.
