Abstract
Several indirect data support the concept of a link between the metabolism of plasma lipoproteins and the occurrence of gallstone disease. These include the fact that most biliary stones are made of cholesterol; that lipoprotein lipids are the precursors of biliary lipids, including cholesterol and bile salts; and that the synthesis, uptake and degradation of plasma lipoproteins occur in the liver and may, therefore, influence the degree of bile cholesterol saturation.
