Abstract

Previous chapters have discussed the possibility of avoiding risk factors for breast cancer development (proscriptive measures), and the potential of measures aimed at preventing or delaying the clinical manifestation of the disease (prescriptive measures). A clear distinction has been made between (i) personal measures which are currently considered by the clinician when faced with a woman at higher than average risk to breast cancer; and (ii) community measures proposed for clinical trial in the population after being found acceptable and relatively free from risk in individual women. Approaches to primary prevention of breast cancer have also been distinguished from attempts at early detection (secondary prevention).
