Abstract
A cross-referencing data base is essential in a paediatric cardiology unit for research and audit of the results of the unit. In a busy unit it must be user-friendly, accessible, and practical. We describe a classification and coding system for paediatric cardiology. The system enables coding of segmental sequential analysis of cardiac pathology. It provides codes for diagnosis, operations and complications. It is practical and easy to remember and use, and runs on a local area network of personal computers. Our system has been in operation for 4 1/2 years, and problems which have been encountered are discussed.
