Abstract
In this chapter will be found descriptions of conifers sufficiently hardy to survive in the open ground in the temperate zone. Coverage of the species, varieties and cultivars obtainable in the trade (and, consequently, commonly to be met with in parks and gardens) is fairly complete, but also included are conifers that will only be found in an arboretum or in a very comprehensive or specialist conifer collection. A few listed here may not yet be in cultivation. Species that are reliably hardy only in the more favourable areas covered by this book are so described: tender genera are mentioned briefly for the sake of completeness.
